Places to Go

Biltmore Estate
Situated on 8,000 acres, Biltmore House is the largest privately owned home in America. It was built by George Vanderbilt and was completed in 1895. Today, the estate encompasses the house, gardens, restaurants, gift shops, stables, inn, and winery. (1-800-543-2961).

Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway follows the mountain ridges from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee. The Parkway’s 469 toll-free miles combine an awesome natural beauty, mountain forests, wildlife, wildflowers, and magnificent views. You can enter the Parkway within 20 minutes from the Mountain Lodge.

Chimney Rock Park
Chimney Rock Park is a natural attraction covering 1000 acres. On a clear day, the awesome view spans as far as Kings Mountain, 75 miles to the east beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can take the elevator 26 stories inside the rock to reach the top of the Chimney and the trails. (1-800-277-9611).

DuPont State Forest
The forest encompasses more than 10,000 acres in Henderson and Transylvania counties. It is situated on a plateau of the Little River valley, with waterfalls and rolling land bordered by moderately steep hills and mountains. Home of Hooker Falls, Triple Falls, High Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, the forest is presently open to the public for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and fishing (NC fishing license required). Pisgah National Forest
The Pisgah National Forest is a land of mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, and heavily forested slopes. Comprised of over 500,000 acres, the Pisgah is primarily a hardwood forest with whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails. This national forest is home of the first tract of land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911 which led to the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States.

Downtown Historic Hendersonville
Only 5 minutes from the Mountain Lodge you will find a true “treasure”. Historic Hendersonville attracts people from all over the country every year that enjoy what our town has to offer. Some people call Hendersonville “Little Charleston”, as its glowing with history and offers tons or locally owned restaurants, boutiques, antique shops, galleries, and much more. Your visit to Western North Carolina wouldn’t be complete without a stroll down Main Street Hendersonville.

Downtown Asheville Shopping
Over 30 independent galleries and more than 100 retail shops, downtown Asheville is a shopper’s paradise. Every street leads to a treasure-trove of uncommon businesses that could only flourish in Asheville. Handmade Appalachian baskets. Vegan pocketbooks. Furniture carved entirely from one tree. Jams, jellies and preserves so fresh that you can practically see the farmers picking the fruit off the vine. This area specializes in the unusual and one-of-a-kind.

Historic Biltmore Village
One of the Carolinas’ most fascinating, unique and enjoyable shopping environments, Historic Biltmore Village features more than 40 shops, restaurants and galleries, each housed in historic 1900-era homes and buildings. Located outside of the Biltmore Estate.

WNC Nature Center
The WNC Nature Center is 40 acres of animals in their native habitats. It provides an opportunity to learn, to touch and to know our rich natural heritage through educational and interactive exhibits.

North Carolina Arboretum
The NC Arboretum is a 434-acre public garden in the Pisgah National Forest, located at the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Highway 191. Surrounded by the dense folds of the botanically diverse Southern Appalachian Mountains, the Arboretum is nestled in one of the most beautiful natural garden settings in America.

Flat Rock Playhouse
The Playhouse is considered one of the “Top Ten Theaters in the Country.” A wonderful escape from life’s hectic pace, the Playhouse offers quality entertainment rarely found so far from Broadway. The Playhouse is open from mid-May through mid-October, plus holiday productions, presenting matinees and evening performances Wednesday through Sunday.

Carl Sandburg House
Carl Sandburg was an American poet, historian, author, and lecturer who spent the final 22 years of his long and productive life at his estate in Flat Rock, NC. Today this National Historic Site offers a keen insight on Mr. Sandburg, his family and their 264 acre working farm. The Sandburg Home was built in 1838 and now houses his collection of 10,000 books, notes and papers. There are numerous hiking trails and a functional goat barn, where Mrs. Sandburg raised her prize winning goats, located next to the Flat Rock Play House.

Snow Tubing at Moonshine Mountain

Horseback Riding
Horseback riding offers a unique, calm and relaxing way to take in unique views of some of the areas most beautiful vistas from the Biltmore House to dramatic back-country scenery. Biltmore has 8,000 acres that include horseback riding trails through peaceful meadows and shady hardwood forests. Saddle up and catch a Western-style guided trail ride (for adults and children over 6 years old) to see one of the only views of the Biltmore Houses western faade. Extended and private guided rides are available.

Hot Air Balloon Rides
After arriving at Asheville Hot Air Balloons you meet your pilot at the balloon port; then you drive to a launch site. You watch the hot air balloon inflate and you might be offered the opportunity to participate in the pre-launch preparations. This is a great way to discover more about the aeronautics of hot air ballooning. Let your pilot know if this is something that interests you.

Zip Lining
Get ready to see the world in a new and different way. Hidden in a secluded mountain cove only 20 minutes north of Asheville, the Navitat Canopy Adventures zip line canopy tour is a tree-based work of art not to be missed.

White Water Rafting
Water adventures in the Asheville area range wildly from whitewater rafting named the best in the whole U.S. to a unique natural waterslide to fun swimming holes and beautiful waterfalls. Western North Carolina is perfect for explorers who don’t mind getting wet. Mother Nature carved out a water park in the area, leaving behind calm wading pools, exciting water slides, memorable swimming holes and rollicking rapids. Some are easily accessible, a few require an adventuresome spirit, and several have lifeguards or trained staff on duty.

Green River Tubing
Tubing is a popular past time for river fun and relaxation, but it is not without hazards. Though it appears as if anyone can do it, tubing is recommended only for people who are able to swim. Children should wear life vest at all times. The minimum age for children to participate is five years old. Green River is NOT considered a “Lazy River”. It takes no special skill to drift on a tube down the river’s current, however, while on the river you are responsible for your personal safety and the safety of your children.

Looking for an active and scenic vacation? The Asheville area has plenty of open road and off-road trails for bikes of a different kind. If you don’t have a bicycle, plenty of shops in the Asheville area rent road bikes, mountain bikes, and cruisers. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers scenic road cycling rides for all skill levels: Ride 75 miles of paved road from Asheville to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (hard). For a shorter trip, take the Blue Ridge Parkway to Craggy Gardens for a well-loved lookout point (moderate).

The mountains of Western North Carolina that surround Asheville is well-known for their many streams and creeks with diverse stream conditions, from tiny, plunge-pool headwater streams to broad, open-valley rivers. The Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests areas around Asheville, Brevard, and Hendersonville are the first targets for quick access to wild, pristine trout fishing. Whether you’re searching for Rainbow, Brown, or Brook Trout, you’ll find that these scenic waters boast some of the best fly fishing around. Small and Large Mouth Bass, Crappie, Sunfish and more can also be found in abundance in the region.

Etowah Valley Golf Course

Broadmoor Golf Links
5 French Broad Avenue, Fletcher, NC. Located near the Asheville Airport by I-26, Broadmoor has 18 holes. It is flat with no mountain terrors, but there’s water everywhere. 6,313 yards. Discounted rates are available.

Cummings Cove Golf Club
3000 Cummings Road, Hendersonville, NC. This course offers 18 holes of golf ONLY, and is 4,800 yards. The terrain is fun and testing, and it fully occupies your game. Discounted rates are available.

The Never Blue
Chef Jesse Roque calls her signature culinary style “Low Mex” because of her inventive blend of Low Country South Carolina dishes with Mexican traditions. The Shrimp and Grits will make you want to find Bobby Flay immediately to schedule a throw down and her Spicy Goobers will have you rethinking your stance on boiled peanuts! Oh, and the drinks…there’s an entire menu dedicated just to those special concoctions.

West First Wood-Fired
We are committed to quality, freshness, & wholesome food at West First & the Flat Rock Village Bakery. We bake all of our organic breads in our wood-fired brick oven. Our 30% whole-wheat pizza doughs & organic pastas are all made by hand.We use authentic Prosciutto di Parma and make our own fennel sausage. We use only organic field greens and loads of fresh herbs & produce. Everything is made fresh from scratch daily.

Mezzaluna Brick Oven & Tap House
Italian cuisine in a casual and friendly environment. Start your meal off with an appetizer of olive oil poached tuna, fried oysters or meatball sliders. Salad choices include a chopped salad with a variety of Italian meats and a traditional Caesar salad. There are several pasta choices, such as linguine with mussels and chorizo, as well as spaghetti with meatballs or sausage. Other entrees include prosciutto-wrapped salmon, a New York strip steak and a chicken Parmesan.

Mrs. G and Mrs. Me
At Mrs G and Me, we all LOVE to cook and experiment in the kitchen! We make everything from scratch – soups, sauces, even our blackening spice, cajun seasoning, you name it!
